H. Allen Orr od 2000 roku jest profesorem biologii na Wydziale Biologii w University of Rochester. Uzyskał stopień bakałarza biologii i filozofii w College of William and Mary (1982), tam też otrzymał tytuł magistra biologii (1985). Pracę doktorską z biologii obronił natomiast w University of Chicago (1990). Obszar zainteresowań badań Orra to genetyka populacyjna, genetyka specjacji oraz genetyka adaptacji. Orr jest również przeciwnikiem wprowadzania do nauk przyrodniczych idei kreacjo- nistycznych, w tym także tzw. teorii inteligentnego projektu.
